As a homeschooling parent and child - baking allows us to learn through a project each and every time we participate in this fun activity! Topics and skills learned when baking are endless, but here is a list to name just a few areas of growth:
Broadly speaking:
Science
Math
Reading
Technology
Arts
More specifically:
fractions
adding
counting
time
temperature
following directions
reading directions
creating directions (to make up her own recipes)
narration (telling me what to write on the blog)
listening
creating
chemistry - mixing ingredients and baking or cooling
Technologically speaking: we use the computer to find recipes, type up our blog entries, upload photographs, research ideas
Artfully speaking: decorating cookies, photographing our baking experiences, drawing and creating recipe books/journals, appreciating cook books and the photos/drawings
There is so much more that I have not included:
Cooperation, quality time together, sharing, patience, creativity, health practices (washing hands, washing fruits, cooking thoroughly, etc.)
By reflecting on this experience each time we engage in it, we are reinforcing these skills, topics, subjects, and virtuous character attributes. Something this simple can teach across all subjects - if given the time to dive into it!
